It seems early, but our bulbs have arrived and that means fall is really here ! It is not a bad idea to buy your bulbs early in the season, while they are fresh, not mixed up, and the selection is huge. At Southlands, we only offer #1 Top Size bulbs in each category. Like everything, bulbs are graded and the best bulbs are bigger. Smaller bulbs are usually still fine, but are sold to mass marketers and chain stores, who only care about low prices, not quality. We love them for this. From what I am hearing, they ain’t even cheap anymore.
I am just going to mention a few varieties that we have this year …..
Who knows if these mentioned varieties will still here if and when you should visit us, but there will still be a fine selection of all types of bulbs well into November.
There are some wonderful NEW Tulips this year. I am intrigued by one called ‘Mascotte’. This tulip has very fringed double pink flowers that look toothed - the 1/2″ fringe is pronounced and tipped in white. A new very dark grape purple tulip called ‘Havran’ has caught my eye. I think it would look great planted with the even darker purple ‘Queen of the Night’ for a ‘colour echo’ effect. ‘Flaming Spring Green’ was here last year, but it is still new in my book. It is an elegant white variety, with apple green blushed petals and occasional red stripes. ‘Spring Green’ is my all-time favourite tulip. Surely you know it by now ? The freshest combo of apple green on white – a customer favourite everywhere.
Have you ever planted my always-recommended variety ‘Beauty Queen’ ? This is a big peachy/orange single tulip that comes back year after year. One of the best for cutting, tasteful colour and longevity, ‘Beauty Queen’ looks great planted with ‘Apricot Beauty’, its paler rival, for a pleasant combo. ‘Black Hero’ is a double very dark purple tulip that looks like a sport of ‘Queen of the Night’ , the legendary ‘Black Tulip’. It would be fun to plant them together, and mix in some of the startling white ‘Calgary’ or the double-flowered white ‘Mondial’ for an experiment in ‘ integrated’ gardening .
