westside, this unique area called Southlands is a horse friendly enclave right in the city.
Large lots and small acreages house many stables, and it is not unusual to see horses and their
riders go by our gates. With delicious free coffee always on hand, many people tell us that they
come down to the nursery just to experience the beautiful atmosphere.
We hope you will visit soon!

The only thing I love more than gardening is sharing that passion with others.
I've had the pleasure of writing 2 books and have been featured in a number of professional
horticultural and gardening magazines. For the past 16 years I've also worked in television on
GlobalBC's Saturday morning news 'Gardening with Thomas Hobbs' segments. The nursery has
been featured on virtually every gardening show including 'The Victory Garden', 'Martha Stewart'
and 'Recreating Eden'. We were even home to 'The Orchid Nazi' on the hit TV show The X Files!

A surprising Dendrobium

Filed under: Uncategorized — yodiehead @ 10:28 pm

      Dendrobium thyrsiflorum

About twenty years ago, I purchased two of this species from Orchids by Hausermann in Chicago.  This is a great orchid source, and they ship to Canada!

Dendrobiums are not really ‘my thing’ …. I like Cattleyas and Cymbidiums more. But, every year, this scraggly plant puts on an insane show of flowers that even I cannot believe. I view it as a drag-queen-as-a-plant . A non-descript office clerk /bank teller/computer geek or mechanic who is patiently waiting to perform a fabulous drag show once a year. This plant has an alter-ego for sure. I swear that is what this orchid does.

Originating in India/and there-abouts, this orchid likes bright light and to get a bit dry quite often. I neglect it . The odd squirt with the hose, maybe a fertilizing if I happen to be using a hose-end sprayer of liquid plant food on my other orchids once or twice a year…. but, sadly, no love or fuss. It has always been in the same 5″ clay pot. It has always been in the same moss/bark mix, with most of its  roots on the outside of the clay pot, happily being dry.
If you find one of these for sale at an orchid show, or order one online, (they are not expensive), expect a dreary, almost leafless cane or two. Keep it frost-free, bright, not soggy and when you see swollen flower buds forming on the side of the stem, put on your huge wig and join the show !
