Established in 1991, and located in a charming 'equestrian pocket' on Vancouver's upscale
westside, this unique area called Southlands is a horse friendly enclave right in the city.
Large lots and small acreages house many stables, and it is not unusual to see horses and their
riders go by our gates. With delicious free coffee always on hand, many people tell us that they
come down to the nursery just to experience the beautiful atmosphere.
We hope you will visit soon!

The only thing I love more than gardening is sharing that passion with others.
I've had the pleasure of writing 2 books and have been featured in a number of professional
horticultural and gardening magazines. For the past 16 years I've also worked in television on
GlobalBC's Saturday morning news 'Gardening with Thomas Hobbs' segments. The nursery has
been featured on virtually every gardening show including 'The Victory Garden', 'Martha Stewart'
and 'Recreating Eden'. We were even home to 'The Orchid Nazi' on the hit TV show The X Files!

Pretend it’s Spring !

Filed under: Uncategorized — yodiehead @ 1:23 am

Here’s a quick, easy way to make a spring mossy basket yourself. To begin, you have to buy a chicken wire or similar basket…. look in the ‘cookware’ section of any large store . Then, go look for very green moss. It grows on tree trunks and even on moist rocks. It is easy to remove, with no harm done. In colder areas, you may have to purchase moss  from a florist or nursery. I find that the nicest, greenest moss is what we collect ourselves for  free .
Begin to line your basket with the green side of the  moss facing outwards. Patch it together, overlap if you want to, until the basket is lined. Don’t put a plastic liner in this time, as this creation is meant to live outdoors (above freezing) on the front porch. In colder areas, it could be kept in a cool, bright window sitting in a  shallow tray of water. This keeps it always moist, and eliminates watering from above.
Buy an assortment of already growing bulbs in small pots from the grocery store, florist or garden centre. Remove the plastic pots, and place your bulb clumps into the basket. It looks best crowded, so place the rootballs touching each other. Fill the gaps and any air pockets with potting soil. Then, dress the entire top surface with more moss, completely hiding all soil. You can make your creation more ‘natural’ looking by adding twigs and bits until you feel you have created a masterpiece !
Grow your little basket in bright light and on the cool side. Bulbs expect cool weather. In Vancouver, outdoors is ideal most days. If frost is expected, bring inside for the night.  When all flowering is finished, dismantle your little garden and plant all the bulbs permanently outdoors .DSC06105DSC06093DSC06118
