Established in 1991, and located in a charming 'equestrian pocket' on Vancouver's upscale
westside, this unique area called Southlands is a horse friendly enclave right in the city.
Large lots and small acreages house many stables, and it is not unusual to see horses and their
riders go by our gates. With delicious free coffee always on hand, many people tell us that they
come down to the nursery just to experience the beautiful atmosphere.
We hope you will visit soon!

New Evergreen Vines – finally!

Filed under: Uncategorized — yodiehead @ 10:45 pm

So many people are looking for an evergreen vine other than ivy .  There aren’t many ! Until now, all we have been able to recommend is Clematis armandii, the evergreen clematis. It is a great vine, but is often killed in cold winters (even in Vancouver), and gets very straggly with age.
FINALLY there is something new to suggest ! Two exciting introductions from our friend Dan Hinkley hit the market this spring. They are both ‘HOLBOELLIAS’. These fast growing, twining climbers are native to high elevations in the Himalayas and China.  A sheltered spot  would be ideal…. we seem to be having extra-cruel winters lately that have been killing lots of ‘hardy’ plants.

The first one is Holboellia latifolia ‘Ritak’ .  This selection has fragrant purplish-pink flowers in March/April that are supposed to smell divine.  The clonal name ‘Ritak’ is the name Dan gave it this plant,  as he found it near the village of Ritak in the Himalayas several years ago. It appears to be a vigorous climber with evergreen leaves on vines up to 15′ long and wide.

Holboellia latifolia 'Ritak'

The other new introduction is Holboellia coriacea ‘Cathedral Gem’ . This vine has WHITE flowers in March/April and also has a lovely fragrance that wafts about.  The flowers are larger and showier than the previously available Holboellia coriacea that UBC introduced and we have also sold. This clone was noticed growing on Winchester Cathedral in Wichester, England. One has to wonder who planted it there?  Where did they get it?  How long ago ? It could not have grown ‘wild’ as it is from continents away……
It would be a neat idea to plant both of these vines together and let them co-mingle. They do produce long, sausage-like fruits that are edible (if you like slime) and taste like Gummy Bears. Those seeking privacy could use trellises and create a very interesting screen effect on a patio or terrace by planting Holboellias in big container(s).
We have big, big plants of both varieties for sale @ $49.99 in a 5 gallon pot, about 4′-5′ tall already .Holboellia coriacea 'Cathedral Gem'

THE POTS HAVE ARRIVED – and they have to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — yodiehead @ 7:58 pm

Big pots 2011
When I ordered a full container of these crusty, frostproof pots  last summer, the nursery was empty and there were lots of spaces
to place them. Now, six months later, they are here and we have no place to put them !!! So, we are blowing them out at HALF PRICE !
By importing them directly from Viet Naam ourselves, we got a very good  price!!  Whole container ? I love you long time!
Some of them are gigantic- perfect as a focal point, left unplanted ,and even possibly lying on their side!
Come down fast and see them ! Prices start at $10.00 and go up to $495.00 for the very hugest ones. Make a deal on a group of pots and
we’ll deliver them for you in the Lower Mainland – for FREE!

The rarest of the rare….

 Double Trillium

The double-flowered form of Trillium grandiflorum is one of the plants that you have to earn- it is so hard to find. It is not for the unworthy.  It is not by Louis Vuitton . You won’t see one on the subway or at Walmart . It is something to dream about !
Even ‘regular’ trilliums are seldom for sale in garden centres or through mail order nurseries. The double-flowered forms (there might be two) are all divisions of the one (or two) original oddball mutants found in  the wild !!  They produce no seed, so have only ever been propagated by division ! This woodland treasure has sold (before my own eyes, but not at my nursery) for $500.00 a pot !  We  have a few plants in stock, ready to bloom (it is  now early April) for the lowest price I have ever seen them at – $49.99 each. Google them and see what I mean !
Should you acquire one, plant it  in brighter light than you might think it would like. An overhead canopy of deciduous trees is ideal, as this is where trilliums evolved. The summer months are hot and dry and trilliums naturally go dormant by then. Mark your treasure with a stick so you know where your trillium is planted !!!
