I get excited at this time of year (late February), because our most special Hellebores arrive from Oregon. These are raised by Ernie and Marietta O’Byrne, in Eugene . This couple pioneered Helleborus breeding and created unique colours that were previously only dreampt of ! This lovely single-flowered apricot one caught my eye. It has dark plum/black nectaries behind the showy yellow stamens. This added element is uncommon and makes this plant extra-special !
I also admired this lemon yellow Hellebore. The dark plum staining and dark nectaries create a contrast you don’t often find. A steal at $29.99 !
This beauty has extra-huge flowers in pale pink. That is my hand in the background ! It looks like an Epiphyllum cactus flower, but it is not !
A ‘Double Black’ was a dream , an impossibility, ten years ago. I would have camped out overnight for the opening of the Hellebore sale near Seattle and still not gotten one. Now we have them !
What a perfect pattern of dots this flower has ! You can pick these individual flowers and float them ( facing upwards ) in a shallow bowl to create a stunning centrepiece. It is the best way to appreciate the flowers , and they last quite well this way. Come down to the nursery soon as we have lots to choose from . But, many are so unique that there may be only ONE of that exact one available!
